Experts recommend a few steps to properly remove makeup residue, such as:

 

Double cleansing

The concept of double cleansing involves cleansing the face twice in a row with different cleansers so that the skin is thoroughly cleansed. This technique is often recommended to help remove excess oil, pollution, dirt, and makeup residue.

The first step is to cleanse the skin with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water, the second step is to use a gentle cleanser to clean the inner skin.

Use the right cleanser

Not all facial cleansers have the same ingredients. Some contain fragrances, surfactants, emulsifiers, formaldehyde releasers, or other ingredients that can cause skin irritation. Always re-read the label on the back of your cleanser and avoid ingredients that may causes irritation.

If you have sensitive skin, you can choose micellar water as one of your cleansing options. This is because micellar water is generally alcohol-free, gentler on sensitive skin, and can help remove makeup.

Aside from micellar water, there are several alternative skin cleansers that you can try, such as:

Baby Oil

Baby oil is a gentle and hypoallergenic product which makes it safe for many people as a skin cleanser and moisturizer. Baby oil is also non-comedogenic which means the product does not cause clogging of pores, except for people with acne-prone skin.

To use baby oil as a makeup remover, you simply pour a small amount in the palm of your hand and massage gently into the skin. Then remove with a cotton pad until all makeup residue is gone.

Baby oil also offers a protective effect on the skin, leaving a healthy and shiny complexion and retaining moisture in the skin.

 

Coconut oil

Coconut oil can also be used to effectively remove makeup. In addition, coconut oil also has antibacterial and antifungal characteristics. However, coconut oil is comedogenic so it is not recommended for acne-prone skin.

 

To remove makeup residue, you can place a small amount in the palm of your hand and rub gently on thicker makeup areas. Blot your face with a tissue before rinsing it off with water.

Rose Water

Rose water is also widely used as a skin cleanser and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Rose water can help remove makeup residue on the face.
