Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, is a chronic skin condition that frequently affects infants and young children, leaving their skin dry, red, and itchy. This can cause discomfort, leading to fussiness and difficulty sleeping.

Although not contagious, atopic dermatitis can significantly disrupt a baby’s rest and impact the well-being of both the infant and their caregivers. Knowing how to handle this condition can help manage symptoms and prevent flare-ups.

Causes of Atopic Dermatitis in Babies

To effectively manage atopic dermatitis, understanding its causes is essential. Atopic dermatitis in babies often arise from a mix of genetic and environmental factors. Babies with a family history of allergies, asthma, or eczema are at higher risk.

Additionally, dry skin, environmental allergens, irritating cleaning products or soaps, and excessive sweating can all increase the chances of atopic dermatitis in babies.

What Parents Can Do

Atopic dermatitis often affects specific areas on a baby’s body, including the face, cheeks, and skin folds such as the elbows, knees, and neck. It manifests as red, inflamed, and scaly patches on the skin that can be intensely itchy, leading babies to scratch and potentially cause abrasions.

Here are key steps parents can take to help ease symptoms and prevent recurrences:

Keep Skin Moisturized

Maintaining skin hydration is one of the most effective ways to manage atopic dermatitis. Use a fragrance-free, dye-free baby moisturizer, applying it after baths and whenever the skin looks dry. This will help create a protective barrier, locking in moisture and reducing irritation.

Use Mild Soaps and Cleansers

To protect your baby's skin, opt for gentle, hypoallergenic soaps and cleansers free from harsh chemicals. Look for products labeled as fragrance-free and formulated for sensitive skin or eczema.

Additionally, choosing a balanced pH soap will also help preserve skin moisture and prevent dryness or irritation.

Select Soft Clothing

Clothes that are tight or don’t absorb sweat well can worsen irritation for babies with atopic dermatitis. Choose soft, breathable fabrics like cotton, which are less likely to aggravate the skin. Avoid synthetic or wool clothing, as these materials may cause discomfort and exacerbate symptoms.

Reduce Exposure to Allergens

Babies with atopic dermatitis may be sensitive to allergens like dust, pet dander, and pollen. Regularly clean your home and keep pets outside if possible to limit your baby’s contact with allergens that might worsen their skin condition.

Manages Itchiness

Itching from atopic dermatitis can be very uncomfortable for babies. To help soothe itchiness, apply a cool compress to the affected area or use a specific ointment, such as Calamine lotion, to relieve irritation. This can help prevent your baby from scratching, reducing the risk of abrasions.

If your baby’s atopic dermatitis symptoms persist or worsen, consult a doctor. The Ai Care health consultation app, available on the App Store and Play Store, can also provide expert guidance on managing eczema in babies.
