A caesarean section is a delivery method commonly used when vaginal birth is not possible or when it presents significant risks to the mother or baby. In recent years, various methods of caesarean delivery have been developed, one of which is the gentle caesarean section.

Gentle caesarean section is distinct from the traditional caesarean. So, what sets them apart? Let’s explore the differences in the following article.

What is Gentle Caesarean Section (C-Section)?

Gentle caesarean section or gentle C-section is a childbirth technique that focuses on the emotional experience of both the mother and baby during the birth process. Its primary aim is to make the delivery experience feel closer to a natural birth.

During a gentle C-section, the mother is encouraged to be directly involved, having the opportunity to view the birth process and immediately engage in skin-to-skin contact with the baby after birth. This method was first popularized in Western countries and is now being adopted in several hospitals across Indonesia.

Apart from fostering a stronger emotional bond between mother and baby, gentle C-section also supports successful breastfeeding, reduces maternal stress, and offers a more positive birthing experience, which helps prevent birth trauma for the mother.

Key Differences between Gentle C-Section and Regular C-Section

Here are several aspects that differentiate a gentle C-section from a traditional C-section:

Procedure and experience of childbirth

In a standard C-section, the procedure is more focused on the medical process with a conventional approach. The mother is generally not allowed to view the birth as a sterile cloth covers the lower body. Once the baby is delivered, it is first examined and cleaned, meaning that skin-to-skin contact often doesn’t occur right away.

In contrast, with a gentle C-section, the mother can watch the birth through a transparent curtain. As soon as the baby is born, it is placed directly on the mother's chest for immediate skin-to-skin contact. This method promotes a closer connection between mother and baby, and facilitates the start of breastfeeding more quickly.

Partner involvement

In a regular caesarean delivery, the partner is typically not permitted in the operating room because the procedure is viewed as a highly focused medical task.

However, with gentle C-section, the partner is invited to be part of the birth. They can witness the birth of the baby firsthand, creating a more emotional and meaningful experience for the family.

Focus on the baby

In a regular caesarean delivery, the primary focus is on the baby’s medical examination and cleaning. After birth, the baby is usually separated from the mother to go through these processes.

On the other hand, gentle C-section places the baby at the center by placing it directly with the mother, ensuring that the baby stays close to the mother even during the operation, reinforcing the emotional connection from the very start.

Operating environment

In gentle C-section, the operating room is designed to be as comfortable as possible, with soft, controlled lighting. Medical monitors, such as electrocardiograms and oximetry, are positioned away from the body to allow more freedom for the mother’s arms.

Taking a more human-centered approach, gentle C-section allows the mother to feel more engaged in her birthing experience. This method has also been shown to significantly reduce the risk of postpartum depression while increasing overall feelings of happiness and satisfaction post-delivery.

Gentle C-section offers a more compassionate and holistic approach to childbirth, focusing not only on the physical health of both mother and baby but also on strengthening emotional bonds and ensuring a more positive birth experience.
