Foot swelling during pregnancy is common and usually harmless. Several reasons contribute to this swelling, including increased blood volume, uterine pressure, and hormonal changes.
This swelling is typically noticeable in the afternoon, particularly after standing or sitting for an extended period of time. The swelling will subside when you rest or go to sleep.
Tips for Reducing Swelling in Pregnant Women’s Feet
It is impossible to totally prevent foot swelling during pregnancy. There are various techniques that reduce foot swelling and make you more comfortable. Here are some methods you could try:
- Do not stand still for too long. If you have to stand for an extended period of time, move around and change positions on a frequent basis.
- Select shoes that are comfy and not too tight. Shoes that are excessively tight can aggravate edema.
- When sitting or lying down, lift your legs as high as possible, using a pillow or a small chair, to allow blood to flow freely.
- Reduce your intake of salt and salty meals, as sodium can induce fluid retention and exacerbate swelling.
- Sleeping on your left side increases blood flow to the heart while decreasing pressure on the body's major blood vessels.
- Regular light exercise, such as walking or swimming, helps to maintain blood circulation and reduce swelling.
- Since weariness can exacerbate swelling, get adequate rest and sleep.
