Hydroquinone is a skin-lightening agent commonly used in facial brightening creams. These creams are popular because they are effective in lightening the skin, brightening the face, and removing acne scars. But, is the use of hydroquinone in cosmetics safe?

How Hydroquinone Works

Hydroquinone is an ingredient in beauty creams that works to brighten the facial skin. This ingredient is often used to even out skin tone and address skin issues caused by hyperpigmentation, where certain areas of the skin become darker than others.

Hydroquinone works by reducing the number of melanocytes. Melanocytes are cells in your skin that produce melanin, which determines your skin color. If melanocyte production is high, the melanin in your skin increases, causing darker skin. By controlling melanocyte production, you can achieve a more even skin tone.

Benefits of Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is commonly used in skin-lightening products, particularly to treat skin issues related to hyperpigmentation. Some skin issues that can be treated with hydroquinone cream include:

  • Removing acne scars
  • Fading dark spots from aging
  • Reducing the appearance of freckles
  • Treating melasma
  • Relieving inflammation from psoriasis and eczema

Additionally, hydroquinone is often used as a pretreatment before laser therapy or chemical peels.

According to Healthline, to get the benefits of hydroquinone, you need to use it regularly. However, before using the cream, it’s recommended to perform a patch test to ensure the product is suitable for your skin.

For a patch test, apply the product to the inside of your arm. Cover the area with a cloth or bandage and leave it for 24 hours. If no itching, burning, or other irritation occurs, you can use it on your face.

Apply hydroquinone-containing products after cleansing your face and using toner. Afterward, you can apply moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.

When using hydroquinone cream, make sure your hands are clean to avoid irritation or staining your clothes. Then, be sure to apply sunscreen when using hydroquinone cream to optimize skin care.

Dangers of Hydroquinone Use

The use of hydroquinone is often controversial. Some countries, like the UK, European nations, and Japan, have banned hydroquinone in beauty products. However, according to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), hydroquinone is safe for facial skincare.

Concerns about hydroquinone use arose after some studies indicated that creams containing hydroquinone were harmful to the liver and kidneys of test rats.

However, to date, there is no research or clinical evidence that hydroquinone is dangerous to humans. The FDA states that hydroquinone is safe when used in concentrations below 2%.

Although safe for use, some people may experience irritation and dryness, especially those with sensitive skin. These reactions typically only appear at the beginning of use and subside after some time.

Hydroquinone is safe to use for treating skin hyperpigmentation. To achieve the desired results, consistency and discipline are required when using the cream. Generally, it takes up to 4 weeks to see the desired treatment outcomes.

However, if you have sensitive skin or darker skin tones, it’s best to consult a dermatologist before using the cream to minimize the risk of irritation.

If you need medical advice or consultation, you can either visit a doctor or make use of the consultation features that are available in the Ai Care application by downloading the Ai Care application from the App Store or Play Store.
