Looking beautiful with fresh skin is a dream for every woman. Entering the age of 30, signs of skin aging such as wrinkles (natural folds in the skin) and fine lines (shallow creases that appear with age) are increasingly evident. To maintain healthy and beautiful skin, you need skincare that suits your age and skin condition.
Why Do You Need Skincare in Your 30s?
At the age of 30, the skin undergoes many changes. The skin's ability to retain water decreases, and the skin loses its elasticity. This condition causes wrinkles, dryness, and dullness. The skin may also develop other problems such as dark spots, acne, and fine lines.
Therefore, it is important to take care of your skin using skincare that focuses on keeping your skin moisturized and slowing signs of aging. In addition, you also need to pay attention to your lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle can help maintain healthy skin from within.
Skincare for Your 30s
Entering the age of 30, you can start using anti-aging skincare such as retinol (a vitamin A derivative that promotes skin cell renewal and boosts collagen production). But the most important thing is to know that your skin needs are different in the morning and at night. Therefore, you need to differentiate between morning and nighttime skincare.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), at the age of 30 and above, you should not use too many products. You just focus on basic skincare, including cleansing, applying sunscreen, and moisturizing.
Of course, you are still allowed to add some serums (concentrated skincare products that address specific concerns) according to your skin needs. Once you've found the right skincare regimen, you may stick to it.
Morning Skincare Routine
In the morning, the skincare focus is on protecting your skin from the sun. Choose a sunscreen that suits your skin type and has an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 30, which helps protect against harmful UV rays. Apply sunscreen to your face, neck, hands, and all parts of your skin that are exposed to the sun.
Likewise, when applying moisturizer (a cream or lotion that hydrates and protects the skin), to prevent neck wrinkles or sagging skin, you can also apply moisturizer to the neck area as well as body lotion for hands and feet.
The morning skincare sequence is as follows:
- Facial cleanser
- Toner
- Serum
- Moisturizer
- Sunscreen
For the morning, you can use a toner and serum containing vitamins C and E or hyaluronic acid that helps retain moisture in the skin.
Nighttime Skincare Routine
Nighttime skincare needs are different from the morning. Cell regeneration (the skin's natural repair process) occurs at night, so skincare at night focuses on moisturizing and repairing the skin. The nighttime skincare routine is not much different from the morning, but there are a few things that need to be added.
When cleansing your face, it is recommended that you do double cleansing (a two-step cleansing method using an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser). You can use a cleansing balm, cleansing oil, or cleansing milk first, followed by a facial soap. Double cleansing helps remove makeup, sunscreen, and dirt, making the absorption of the next skincare steps more effective.
The night skincare sequence is as follows:
- Cleansing balm/oil/milk
- Facial cleanser
- Toner
- Serum
- Eye cream
- Moisturizer or night cream
For nighttime skincare, you can use a retinol toner or serum (to improve skin elasticity and promote a youthful look). You can also exfoliate using either physical exfoliation (scrubs or masks) or chemical exfoliation with serums containing AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid), BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid), or PHA (Polyhydroxy Acid), such as salicylic acid (a BHA), which helps clear clogged pores and reduce acne, and lactic acid (an AHA), which gently exfoliates and brightens the skin.
It is recommended to exfoliate regularly, 2-3 times a week, based on your skin type and needs. You can also finish your nighttime skincare routine with a hydrating sheet mask (a fabric mask soaked in serum) or face oil for extra nourishment.
Entering the age of 30 and above, use skincare that contains anti-aging formulas to support skin regeneration (the renewal of skin cells). Always use sunscreen daily and do double cleansing at night to remove dirt, dust, and dead skin cells from your pores.
