Coughs and colds are common health issues in babies, mainly because their immune systems are still developing. While these conditions are usually not serious, they can make babies uncomfortable and require extra care from parents.

However, many parents feel uncertain and concerned about giving over-the-counter cough and cold medication. What is the safest way to treat a baby’s cough and cold?

Home Treatment to Relieve Coughs and Colds in Babies

Although these conditions are typically not dangerous, they can cause discomfort that disrupts your baby’s sleep and appetite. If your baby has a cough and cold, here are some home remedies that may help ease the symptoms:

Maintain Humidity

Dry air can worsen irritation in your baby’s respiratory system. To alleviate nasal congestion and coughing, you can use a humidifier in your baby’s room to maintain a comfortable level of humidity.

Elevate the Head During Sleep

Nasal congestion may make it hard for babies to sleep soundly. Try holding your baby while gently elevating their head, or you can use a small pillow to help them breathe more easily while they sleep.

Provide Breast Milk and Adequate Fluids

If your baby is still breastfeeding, offer more frequent feedings. Breast milk contains natural antibodies that assist in fighting infections. It also keeps your baby hydrated, which helps with their recovery.

For babies who have started eating solid foods, offer extra fluids, such as warm soup or unsweetened fruit juice.

Clear the Nasal Passage

Suctioning your baby’s nose can help them breathe more comfortably. Begin by placing a saline solution in your baby’s nose and wait a few moments for the mucus to loosen. Then, use a syringe or electric nasal aspirator to gently clear out the mucus.

Steam Bath

Warm steam can help relieve your baby’s stuffy nose. Run hot water in the bathroom to create steam. Close the bathroom door and sit with your baby for a few minutes.

Afterward, give your baby a warm bath to help them feel more comfortable. Ensure that the bath water is lukewarm for your baby’s comfort.

Medical Treatment for Coughs and Colds in Babies

Since most coughs and colds in babies are caused by viral infections, antibiotics are usually unnecessary. It’s best to take your baby to the doctor for a thorough evaluation.

Over-the-counter cough and cold medicines should not be given to babies under 2 years old. Therefore, avoid using any cough or cold medicine unless prescribed by a doctor.

If your baby has a fever above 38º Celsius, your doctor may recommend paracetamol or ibuprofen based on your baby’s age and weight. However, it’s important to note that ibuprofen should not be given to babies under 6 months old unless prescribed and directed by a doctor.

Coughs and colds in babies usually resolve on their own within 7-10 days. However, if symptoms worsen—such as trouble breathing, wheezing, a fever above 38º in babies under 8 months, a cough lasting more than two weeks, or signs of dehydration—seek medical attention immediately.

During home care, you can consult a doctor through the consultation service on the Ai Care app, available for download on the App Store or Play Store.
