Junk food is not healthy. Junk food is often high in "empty calories", which means the food provides energy but does not exactly provide the essential nutrients needed by the body.

Processed snacks such as chips, candies, cookies, fast food, and sodas are typically high in saturated fat, added sugars, and salts. Consuming junk food excessively is linked to various diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other health issues.

 

Ways to Stop Eating Junk Food

Many people actually understand that junk food is not a good choice for your health. However, many people choose junk food because of their tempting look and taste, they're also easy to get compared to healthy foods, more affordable price, and creative food advertising. In addition, some people find comfort in eating junk food as they provide happiness and comfort.

Keeping in mind that the impact of eating junk food excessively is very bad for your health, here are ways on how to stop eating junk food:

 

Cooking at home

Eating more home-cooked meals is a positive step towards a healthier diet. Cooking at home gives you full control over the ingredients that you used, while also reduces excessive sugar, salt and fat in your food and adds enough fiber to your diet.

 

Increase protein intake

Increasing your protein intake in your daily diet has many benefits. One of the benefits are providing a longer feeling of satiety, help maintaining muscle mass, and reducing cravings for foods that are high sugar and fat.

Generally, 10-35 percent of your daily calorie intake have to come from protein. For example, your daily calorie intake is 2000 calories a day, then you should consume around 200-700 calories of protein. It is important to remember that a high-protein diet also needs to be accompanied with balanced nutritional needs. It is recommended to consult with your doctor in regards of your daily protein intake.

Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep plays an important role in maintaining overall health. It is advised that adults sleep for around 7-9 hours every night. Lack of sleep can affect your eating habits and alter the levels of hormones that regulate appetite, such as ghrelin and leptin. Research shows that lack of sleep can increase ghrelin and decrease leptin, which in turn increasing hunger and cravings for foods that are high in fat and sugar the next day.

 

Manage stress wisely

Stress could affect eating habits and some people eat junk food to relieve their stress. Chronic stress could increase the production of cortisol in the body. Cortisol is hormone that can slow down metabolism and increase appetite if the levels are high in the body. This increase in appetite can lead to cravings for foods high in fat and sugar.

 

Not dieting too strictly

Following a diet too strictly can lead to nutrient deficiencies, fatigue, and increase the risk of developing unhealthy eating habits. Restrictive diets could lead the person to end up in yo-yo dieting, where you experience repeated cycle of weight loss and weight gain.

In addition, extreme food restriction can lead to cravings for foods that you would normally avoid.

Eat regularly

Maintaining regular meal times can prevent excessive hunger. Uncontrollable hunger makes you more susceptible to unhealthy or excessive food choices.

Having breakfast is also important in providing energy to start the day. According to research, people who regularly eat breakfast tend to have a more balanced diet and less snacking.
