It's common to alter your eating habits during the fasting month, which may impact the type of food you consume and the times you eat. A sore throat can be caused by eating fatty or spicy foods, not drinking water for extended periods, and consuming unhealthy food and beverages.

Fasting during Ramadan can be uncomfortable if you have a sore throat. It can make eating, drinking, and even swallowing your saliva painful. Therefore, it's important to take some preventive measures to ensure your fast goes smoothly and you don't experience heartburn or any other discomfort.

Prevent Sore Throats While Fasting in Ramadan

There are several steps you can take to prevent heartburn during fasting, including:

Include fruits and vegetables in your diet

A sore throat may indicate the presence of an infection, which can be caused by viruses or bacteria. Infections tend to occur more frequently when the immune system is weak.

To prevent sore throat and strengthen the body's immune system during fasting, consume more fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, zinc, and antioxidants such as oranges, mangoes, strawberries, kiwi, papaya, green vegetables, carrots, tomatoes, and garlic.

It is important to consume plenty of water

It is crucial to drink plenty of water while fasting to prevent dehydration and alleviate sore throat. Consuming sufficient amounts of water helps keep the throat hydrated and minimizes irritation and dryness.

Water can help clear mucus in the respiratory tract, which assists in fighting infections and maintaining the respiratory system.

Avoid spicy food

Spicy food is often tempting and popular to eat when breaking the fast, especially because of its distinctive and delicious taste. However, you must pay attention to the potential negative impact on your health, especially when fasting.

Chemical compounds like capsaicin in spicy foods can activate heat receptors in the mouth and throat, leading to a burning or stinging sensation. This can cause discomfort and irritation in the throat, particularly when fasting, as the lack of fluid intake can make the throat feel dry.

Frequently wash your hands

Hand hygiene is essential to prevent the transmission of germs that lead to sore throats and other infections. When fasting, it is crucial to wash your hands frequently with soap and running water for a minimum of 20 seconds. In the absence of running water, you can use a hand sanitizer that has at least 60% alcohol in it.

Get enough sleep

In addition to the steps above, you must ensure adequate rest for a good immune system. Try to sleep and wake up simultaneously so your body has a regular sleep pattern. Ensure you get enough sleep every night at least 7-9 hours.

Avoid overeating before bedtime so digestion runs smoothly and does not interfere with sleep quality.

Most sore throats can be treated with some of the steps mentioned above. However, if your sore throat is very severe, you need to see a doctor and perhaps get antibiotics if the sore throat is caused by a bacterial infection.
