In addition to getting a premarital check-up, you also need to plan for premarital immunizations. Premarital immunization is actually the same as any other immunization, the main purpose of which is to prevent diseases that can potentially be transmitted by your partner and transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy. Both men and women should get these vaccinations before marriage.

Just like women, men also need vaccines to protect themselves and their partners as well as the fetus that the wife will carry in the future after marriage. Here are some types of vaccines recommended for men before marriage:

HPV Vaccine

HPV is one of the sexually transmitted infections that is mainly found in people aged 15-59 years. Not only women but men can also be infected with HPV, especially if they are active in unprotected sexual intercourse and like to change partners.

HPV infection can be transmitted through oral, anal, or vaginal intercourse with someone who is already infected. The virus can also be spread through direct skin contact during intercourse. Most men who have HPV infection do not experience any symptoms, but the virus will not go away and can develop into warts, bumps, or abnormal growths on the penis, testicles, rectum, mouth, or throat.

To prevent the risk of these sexually transmitted infections, men are advised to get the HPV vaccine, which can be obtained from the age of 11 or 12. Adults up to 26 years old are also recommended to get the HPV vaccine if they have not received this vaccine before. The vaccine is given in 3 doses in months 0, 2 and 6.

Hepatitis B Vaccine

The hepatitis B vaccine is not only recommended for children. Adult men aged 19-59 years, as well as those aged >60 years with either hepatitis B risk factors or seeking additional protection, can get the hepatitis B vaccine. The vaccine will be given in 3 doses at months 0, 1 and 6.

Immunization can protect hepatitis B for a long time in healthy individuals, at least for 30 years. The vaccine also protects against critical illness and chronic hepatitis B infection.

MMR vaccine

The MMR vaccine protects children and adults from measles, mumps and rubella (measles, mumps and German measles). These diseases are highly contagious and can easily spread through the air when someone sneezes, laughs, coughs, or just breathes.

Rubella infection is especially a cause for concern as it can lead to complications in a couple's pregnancy such as congenital birth defects affecting the heart, hearing system, liver and spleen, and mental retardation.  Apart from children, adults can also get the MMR vaccine, getting 1 or 2 doses with a gap between the two doses of at least 28 days.

Tdap Vaccine

The Tdap vaccine is a combination vaccine that protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (pertussis). The CDC recommends the Tdap vaccine for all adults who are at least 19 years old, which can be given once every 10 years. In addition to being recommended for pregnant women, this vaccine is also recommended for medical workers and people traveling to areas with a high number of whooping cough cases.
