Brushing your teeth with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day helps maintain healthy teeth and prevent tooth decay. Brushing should be done especially after breakfast and before bedtime.

You can choose to use a manual toothbrush or an electronic toothbrush. According to experts, both are equally effective in helping to clean and maintain healthy teeth.

Benefits of Using an Electric Toothbrush

Studies show that electric toothbrushes provide additional benefits in cleaning teeth and preventing dental problems. Here are some of the benefits of using an electric toothbrush, such as:

Speed and automatic movement

Electric toothbrushes have a rotating motion that helps clean teeth more efficiently than hand movements when using a manual toothbrush. This automatic motion can help reach hard-to-reach areas, such as between teeth and certain corners or areas in the mouth.

More consistent pressure

Some electric toothbrushes are equipped with a pressure sensor that alerts the user if they are brushing too hard. Too much pressure while brushing can cause gum irritation and tooth enamel erosion. With the help of a pressure sensor, electric toothbrushes can help make the pressure applied to the teeth more consistent during brushing.

Proper brushing duration

Some electric toothbrushes also have a built-in timer that helps ensure users brush for the right amount of time. This also helps remind users not to rush their brushing so that they can thoroughly clean every crevice of their teeth.

Better plaque reduction

Research shows that electric toothbrushes can reduce plaque more effectively than manual toothbrushes. Plaque is a sticky film that forms on the surface of teeth due to a buildup of bacteria and acids from food debris in the mouth.

Bacteria in plaque will use sugars found in food and drinks to produce acids. This acid will attack the enamel or outer layer of the teeth, forming holes in the teeth.

This can lead to various tooth decay. If plaque is not cleaned properly, it will harden and become tartar. Tartar is more difficult to remove with regular brushing. Accumulated tartar can cause irritation and disturbance to the gums.

Things to Watch Out for with Electric Toothbrushes

Aside from being much more expensive than a manual toothbrush, there are a few things to consider before using an electric toothbrush, such as:

  • Just like a manual toothbrush, the possibility of brushing too hard with an electric toothbrush remains
  • Overuse of an electric toothbrush may cause gum irritation or bleeding
  • May cause discomfort from the change from manual to electric toothbrushes, as well as from the sensation that electric toothbrushes give to the mouth
  • Electric toothbrushes require electricity to be used, which can make it difficult to charge your toothbrush when you are on vacation

Not everyone may be suitable for using an electric toothbrush. You should consider using an electric toothbrush especially if you have problematic gums, loosely spaced teeth, are wearing braces or dentures, and your toothbrush preferences.

Before using an electric toothbrush, it is advisable to consult a dentist first. The doctor will help recommend a suitable toothbrush type according to your oral health needs and conditions.
