Oily skin is caused by oil-producing glands (Sebaceous Glands) in the skin that produce too much sebum. Sebum is a natural oily substance your skin makes to protect and moisturize itself.

Having oily skin means you need to carefully choose the right skincare products, one of which is using the right sunscreen.

Characteristics of Oily Skin

People with oily skin have recognizable features such as:

  • Oily and shiny skin appearance
  • Very large and visible pores
  • Skin that looks thick or rough
  • Acne that sometimes or frequently appears
  • Clogged pores and frequent blackheads

People with oily skin often struggle to find makeup that suits their skin. Makeup generally does not adhere well.

Tips for Choosing Sunscreen for Oily Skin

Selecting skincare products can be a challenge for those with oily skin. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that people with oily skin choose sunscreens with the following features:

  • Sunscreen containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide
  • Broad-spectrum protection against ultraviolet rays (UVA and UVB)
  • SPF of at least 30 or higher
  • Free of added fragrances or oils
  • Moisture-resistant during swimming or heat-induced sweating

In addition to using the right sunscreen, you still need to use skincare products to care for oily skin. Here are some dermatologist-recommended tips for caring for oily skin:

  • Wash your face every morning, at night before bed, and after exercise. Use a mild cleanser that does not irritate the skin.
  • Choose skincare and makeup products labeled as oil-free and non-comedogenic, meaning they won't clog pores or cause acne.
  • Use lightweight formulas that cleanse oily skin without drying it out or causing irritation.
  • Avoid oil- and alcohol-based products, which can irritate the skin.
  • Use water-based moisturizers that are easily absorbed and do not trigger excess oil production.
  • Always wear sunscreen and reapply it every few hours, especially when active under direct sunlight.
  • Choose water-based or oil-free makeup products.
  • Avoid sleeping with makeup on; always remove makeup before bed.
  • Use blotting papers to absorb excess oil by patting, not rubbing, them on the skin.
  • Avoid touching your face with dirty hands to prevent bacteria growth and new skin problems.

Even if you have oily skin, everyone's skin condition can vary. To find the right products for your specific skin type and issues, it's important to consult with a dermatologist. This way, the doctor can prescribe suitable products and address skin problems appropriately.

If you need medical advice or consultation, you can either visit a doctor or make use of the consultation features that are available in the Ai Care application by downloading the Ai Care application from the App Store or Play Store.
