Hangovers are a condition that usually occurs after you have consumed excessive alcohol. During a hangover, you may experience nausea, dizziness, headaches, vomiting, and fatigue. Symptoms can vary from person to person, depending on how fast you drank, how much alcohol you consumed, and how your body processes the alcohol.

Most hangover symptoms are caused by the toxins contained in the alcohol itself. Drunkenness can be unpleasant, and apart from experiencing some of the symptoms, it also affects the ability to think clearly and make decisions and increases the risk of accidental injury.

 

How to Deal with a Hangover

The metabolic process of converting alcohol in the body into acetaldehyde (a substance in alcohol that is toxic at high levels) can cause hangovers. People who are light to moderate drinkers are also more prone to hangovers when drinking alcoholic beverages.

Since hangovers can be very unpleasant, increase the risk of injury, and disrupt daily activities, here are some things you can do:

Drink water

Alcohol is a diuretic, which can increase urine production and cause dehydration. During a hangover, you may sweat more, vomit, and have diarrhea, putting you at greater risk of losing body fluids.

For this reason, it is recommended that you drink water slowly in small amounts to help overcome dehydration.You can also drink electrolyte drinks to replace fluids and electrolytes lost by the body.

Eat carbs

Consuming alcohol can affect sugar levels in the body and cause a drop in blood sugar. When blood sugar is low, the body will feel tired, dizzy, have headaches, or have difficulty focusing.

It is important to maintain normal blood sugar levels by including carbohydrates in your diet, especially after drinking alcohol. You can eat toast or drink fruit juice to raise blood sugar levels slowly.

Taking pain medication

Pain medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen can help relieve headaches and other painful symptoms associated with alcohol hangovers. However, you need to be aware of the side effects of NSAID drugs such as ibuprofen, which can cause irritation to the stomach, especially after the stomach has been irritated by alcohol.

It is also best to avoid painkillers such as paracetamol (acetaminophen) if alcohol is still present in the body, as taking the two too close together can increase liver damage.

Women should not drink more than one glass of alcohol per day, while men should limit alcohol to no more than two glasses per day.
