Have you ever experienced back pain while breathing? Typically, breathing should not cause pain anywhere in the body. However, if you feel discomfort or pain in your back while breathing, it could be a sign of an underlying medical condition or other health issues.

Causes of Back Pain When Breathing

Back pain when breathing can range from relatively minor issues like muscle strain to more serious conditions such as pneumonia or even heart attacks. Identifying the cause is essential in order to seek the most effective treatment.

Muscle Tension

One of the most common reasons for back pain when breathing is muscle tension. The muscles in your upper back may become strained, causing discomfort when you breathe. As air enters and exits your lungs, it can stretch these muscles, exacerbating the pain. Muscle tension in the back is often caused by physical activities such as injury, overexertion, or heavy lifting.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis refers to an abnormal curvature of the spine, usually bending sideways. When the spine curves at a certain angle, it can put additional pressure on the lungs, making breathing painful.

Obesity

Being overweight places additional stress on various parts of your body, including your neck, chest, abdomen, and joints. For some individuals, this excess weight can lead to breathing difficulties, including pain when inhaling deeply.

Pneumonia

Back pain when breathing may also be a sign of pneumonia, a lung infection that causes fluid to accumulate in the small air sacs (alveoli) of the lungs. Pneumonia can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi and can affect one or both lungs.

In addition to back pain, symptoms of pneumonia often include chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing, and fever. Treatment for pneumonia depends on its cause, with doctors typically prescribing antibiotics or antifungal medications to address the infection.

Lung Cancer

In its early stages, lung cancer often presents with few or no symptoms. However, one common sign of lung cancer is chest pain when breathing deeply or coughing. If the tumor grows large enough, it may press against nerves in the spine, causing back pain while breathing.

Kyphosis

Kyphosis is a condition in which the upper spine curves abnormally, leading to a rounded or hunched back. This curvature can cause several problems, including back pain, difficulty breathing, balance issues, and even swelling. The changes in posture and spine alignment may interfere with the lungs' ability to expand fully, leading to discomfort when breathing.

Rib Injury

Injuries to the ribs, such as fractures or bruising, can cause pain in both the ribs and the back. This type of pain often intensifies when breathing deeply, coughing, or sneezing. If you’ve recently had a fall, accident, or injury, rib fractures could be the cause of your back pain. Treatment typically involves pain relief and physical therapy to help with recovery.

Intercostal Neuralgia

Intercostal neuralgia is a condition that affects the intercostal nerves, which run between the ribs and extend through the chest and upper abdominal areas. Inflammation or irritation of these nerves can lead to sharp or burning pain, which worsens when you breathe.

Heart Attack

In some cases, back pain when breathing could be a sign of a heart attack. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart muscle is blocked. This blockage can lead to chest pain, but in some instances, the pain may radiate to the back, especially when breathing deeply. Other symptoms of a heart attack include shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, pain in the jaw or arms, and a feeling of pressure or tightness in the chest. A heart attack is a medical emergency, and immediate treatment is essential.

Back pain when breathing can arise from a wide variety of causes, some of which are mild and some potentially life-threatening. If you experience persistent back pain that worsens when breathing, it’s crucial to seek medical attention. You can also consult a doctor through the Ai Care app, which is available for download on both the App Store and Play Store.
