Everyone has their personal preference regarding their hair care. For most people, even washing or shampooing their hair doesn't have to be done every day.

Are there any negative impacts on hair and skin health if you rarely shampoo your hair?

Impacts on Hair Health if You Don't Wash Your Hair

Not everyone may need to wash their hair every day, especially if they have dry skin and hair. However, shampooing is the only way to remove dust, dirt, excess oil, and product residue from the hair and scalp. Shampooing helps keep the skin clean and healthy.

Rarely shampooing or never shampooing your hair can have negative effects and the overall health of the hair, such as:

Slows down hair growth

Frequency of shampooing can affect hair health although it is not directly the cause of slow hair growth. However, infrequent shampooing can lead to a buildup of dirt, excess oil, and residue on the scalp which can affect hair growth.

Causes bad odor

The buildup of oil, dirt, and residue on the scalp and hair can cause bad odor. The natural oils produced by the scalp are good lubricants for the hair, but if overproduced and not cleaned regularly, these oils can build up and cause the hair to look dull and smell bad.

Dandruff

Dirty hair is not the direct cause of dandruff. Dandruff is usually caused by scalp conditions such as irritated scalp, overly dry scalp, the presence of fungus, sensitivity to certain hair products, or other skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.

But when the hair and scalp are not cleaned regularly, the buildup of oil and dead skin cells on the scalp can create a favorable environment for fungi to grow, which can aggravate the problem of dandruff. For this reason, it is very important to keep the hair and scalp clean by shampooing regularly.

Itchy scalp

Sebum buildup due to infrequent shampooing can increase itching on the scalp. This buildup can create a favorable environment for the growth of bacteria, yeast, and fungi that can cause irritation or increase itching on the scalp.

Studies also show that scalp itching tends to be more severe in people with oily hair. Shampooing more frequently may reduce the itchiness.

How Many Times Should You Wash Your Hair in A Week?

The frequency of shampooing in a week varies, depending on hair type, activity, and lifestyle.

Oily hair

Oily hair may need more frequent shampooing, at least every other day or every day. Oily hair tends to get dirty faster. Regular shampooing can help keep the scalp clean and comfortable.

Normal or dry hair

Those with normal or dry hair need to wash their hair at least 2-3 times a week. Shampooing too often can remove the natural oils needed to keep hair moisturized.

Curly hair

Curly hair usually tends to be dry. You may need to shampoo less frequently to keep your hair moisturized and more manageable.

Some people who actively exercise also need to wash their hair more often to remove sweat and dirt.

When you have hair problems that are difficult to solve with shampooing or using hair care products, you should consult a doctor or dermatologist. If you need medical advice or consultation, you can either visit a doctor or make use of the consultation features that are available in the Ai Care application by downloading the Ai Care application from the App Store or Play Store.
