Generally, skin types are categorized into four groups: normal skin, dry skin, oily skin, and combination skin. Every skin type has different problems. The skin care products applied also differ; it's important to get the right one for yours.
The basic skin care regimen is essentially the same for every skin type. The only thing that is different is the kind of product that is applied to make it more suitable and efficient for the skin problem.
Routine Treatments for All Skin Types
Every skin type needs basic skin care in the morning and before bed. No matter what kind of skin you have—normal, dry, oily, or combination—you should follow the following basic care routine:
Cleansing
No matter your skin type, you should always begin your skincare routine with a thorough cleansing of the face. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing your face with soap twice a day—in the morning and before bed—and especially after excessive sweating, regardless of your skin type. If you wash your face too frequently, you risk stripping your skin of its protective oils and drying it out.
Choose a mild-formulated facial cleanser that excludes alcohol, an ingredient that has the potential to induce skin irritation and dehydration. Frequent use of soap-containing scrubs should be avoided to prevent damage to the skin barrier.
Applying face serum
Serum is a basic skin care product that is used frequently and is recommended for basic skin care. Due to its light composition, this product may absorb into the skin quickly, producing faster and more effective results.
Additionally, serum includes active components to treat skin problems, such as vitamins, retinol, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, and peptides. This serum is good for oily skin types and all others because of its lightweight texture and rapid absorption; it also leaves skin feeling clean and fresh
Applying moisturizer
After showering, moisturizer is essential for all skin types. Moisturizer keeps skin smooth and hydrated.
For optimal results, choose a moisturizer based on your skin type. Dry skin needs richer, oil-based cream or ointment moisturizers, while oily skin prefers lighter lotions or gel ones.
Choose moisturizing creams without scents to avoid skin irritation, especially for dry skin.
Applying sunscreen
Regular application of sunscreen is essential for both the maintenance of skin health and the prevention of skin problems resulting from UV radiation exposure. Sunscreen should be applied in the following ways, according to the American Academy of Dermatology:
- Choose a waterproof sunscreen with a broad spectrum and a minimum SPF of 30 or higher.
- Consistently apply sunscreen for at least 15 minutes before leaving the house.
- Apply a sufficient amount of sunscreen to protect your skin.
- Apply sunscreen specifically to exposed regions such as the face, neck, ears, instep, hands, and feet. To protect your lips, choose a lip balm that contains sunscreen.
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours or directly after sweating or swimming.
Regular, basic skin care may help to avoid skin problems. However, if you still have persistent skin problems that are challenging to cure, it is advisable to seek the guidance of a medical professional or dermatologist. They may help in identifying the underlying cause of your skin problems and suggesting proper treatments.
