Symptoms Of Mycoplasma Pneumonia In Children Under The Age Of 5

Share :

Mycoplasma pneumonia is one of the bacteria that can cause pneumonia, this condition is also commonly known as atypical pneumonia.

The symptoms of a Mycoplasma pneumonia infection differ slightly from those caused by other bacteria. While the symptoms may appear milder at first, this infection should not be underestimated.

Common symptoms of Mycoplasma pneumonia

Mycoplasma pneumonia can affect anyone but is more common in certain age groups, including children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly, particularly those with weakened immune systems.

The symptoms of Mycoplasma pneumonia may differ slightly from those of bacterial pneumonia. Key differences include:

Cough symptoms

Bacterial pneumonia typically results in a productive cough with thicker mucus or phlegm. Mycoplasma pneumonia, on the other hand, typically begins with a persistent dry cough.

Fever

Bacterial pneumonia results in a higher fever than Mycoplasma pneumonia. Fever in Mycoplasma pneumonia is usually milder, allowing the infected person to continue their normal activities.

Sore throat

In bacterial pneumonia, a sore throat is not the most common symptom. However, one of the primary symptoms of mycoplasma pneumonia is a sore throat.

Lung damage

Bacterial pneumonia damages lung tissue more severely than Mycoplasma pneumonia. However, this does not mean that the disease should be overlooked; Mycoplasma pneumonia still requires proper treatment.

Symptoms of Mycoplasma pneumonia in children under 5 years of age

In addition to having different symptoms from bacterial pneumonia, Mycoplasma pneumonia symptoms in adults and children under the age of five can vary. This difference could be attributed to the body's response to the infection.

According to the CDC, children under the age of 5 infected with Mycoplasma pneumonia typically exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Sore throat
  • Watery eyes
  • Wheezing
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Despite the differences in symptoms, the treatment for Mycoplasma pneumonia infection in children and adults is generally the same. Mild cases may be treated with antibiotics and home care, including adequate rest, fluid intake, and other medications to relieve symptoms such as fever and cough.

However, in some cases, children and adults infected with Mycoplasma pneumonia require hospitalization, particularly if serious complications develop. Monitoring symptoms during home care is also critical to avoiding serious complications like severe pneumonia, encephalitis, hemolytic anemia, kidney disorders, and skin problems.
