Menstruation is a normal process for all women. Menstruation occurs when the previously prepared uterine lining sheds in the absence of pregnancy. This shedding results in menstrual blood, which contains both fluid and tissue. Menstrual blood flows from the uterus to the cervix before exiting the body via the vagina.

Many people wonder whether it is safe to have sex during their period. The answer can be found in this article review.

Is it safe to have intercourse during menstruation?

Couples typically have sex, and it can occur at any time, including during menstruation or pregnancy (as long as you are in good health). Having sex during menstruation can help relieve abdominal cramps, shorten the menstrual period, increase sexual desire, and relieve headaches.

However, some people choose not to have sex while menstruating, which is understandable given their insecurity and discomfort. When it comes to the safety of having sex during menstruation, there are, of course, risks to consider. Here are some risks to be aware of:

Risk of infection

Having sex during menstruation can increase the risk of transmitting infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and vaginal infections like yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis. Men who have sex while their partners are menstruating are also at risk of developing fungal infections leading to inflammation of the head of the penis.

Using condoms is recommended to reduce the risk of infection during intercourse while menstruating.

Risk of pregnancy

Just because the uterine lining has shed does not mean you cannot get pregnant when you have sex during your period. Although it is relatively rare, you can get pregnant while menstruating, especially if you have a shorter menstrual cycle (about 21 to 24 days). Sperm can survive in the vagina for up to five days, so pregnancy is still possible.

Discomfort

Having sex while your menstrual flow is heavy is not a good idea. The blood could stain the sheets and potentially trigger more bleeding. This can make you uncomfortable and cause you to lose sexual desire.

Tips for having intercourse while menstruating

If you and your partner don't mind having sex while menstruating, there are some guidelines you can follow to improve safety and satisfaction. What are they?

  • Ensure that menstrual blood flow is light so you don't have to worry about smearing and making you and your partner uncomfortable.
  • Use condoms for protection against infections and pregnancy.
  • Opt for the missionary position to reduce additional blood flow.
  • Consider having intercourse in the shower to easily wash away any blood.

While having sex during your period is generally safe, you should consider a safer and more enjoyable time. You can use a feminine calendar to determine the best time to have sex outside of your period, or you can consult a doctor.

If you need medical advice or consultation, you can either visit a doctor or make use of the consultation features that are available in the Ai Care application by downloading the Ai Care application from the App Store or Play Store.
