Narcissism is defined as extreme self-involvement in which a person focuses on their own needs and desires while ignoring the needs of those around them. Some people may engage in narcissistic behaviors on occasion, such as wanting to be praised or believing they are superior to others. These behaviors do not indicate that the person has narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).
Differences between narcissism and NPD
Both narcissism and NPD are associated with self-centeredness, but their severity and impact vary significantly.
Narcissism can range from mild to moderate, and these behaviors do not significantly interfere with daily life. For example, it is limited to receiving compliments, wanting to appear successful, and occasionally feeling superior to others.
Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a chronic personality disorder. Symptoms become more severe and can disrupt daily life or cause issues in relationships, work, and mental health.
Characteristics of a narcissist
Narcissism is frequently misinterpreted as arrogance and self-centeredness. To avoid misinterpretation, recognize some of the common narcissistic traits listed below:
- A feeling of entitlement and superiority
People who exhibit narcissistic behavior have an exaggerated sense of importance, specialness, and entitlement. They feel superior, look down on others, struggle to accept criticism, and are easily offended.
- Extreme desire for admiration and recognition
Narcissistic people are constantly looking for praise and validation from others. They frequently exaggerate their accomplishments and talents, seeking excessive attention and recognition.
This intense desire for admiration and recognition makes it difficult for them to accept that others may be more successful or talented than themselves.
- Lack of empathy and concern for others
People with narcissistic personalities struggle to understand and empathize with others' emotions. They frequently ignore other people's needs and feelings in favor of their own. This explains why they frequently struggle to form healthy relationships.
- Manipulative and exploitative behavior
People with narcissistic personalities frequently manipulate others to achieve their goals, exploit others without remorse, and use others to boost their ego and status.
They find it difficult to accept responsibility for their own actions.
- Excessive pride and arrogance
People with narcissistic personalities have excessive and unrealistic self-confidence. They frequently brag about themselves and belittle others, maintaining a "me better" attitude and feeling superior to others.
It is important to note that not everyone who exhibits signs of narcissism will be diagnosed with NPD. Identifying which behavioral patterns constitute NPD is a complicated process that requires a thorough evaluation by a mental health professional.
However, if the characteristics as mentioned above have an impact on relationships, work, or mental health, one should seek professional help from a psychologist or psychiatrist. Therapy can help people understand their own thought patterns and behaviors, as well as develop healthier coping mechanisms.
