Ramadan fasting is not only about refraining from food and drink, but also an opportunity to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Unfortunately, some unhealthy habits are often overlooked during this period, such as skipping suhoor, overeating at iftar, or not drinking enough water.

These habits can negatively affect the body and disrupt the fasting experience. So, what habits should you avoid during Ramadan?

Unhealthy Habits to Avoid During Ramadan Fasting

Skipping Suhoor

Many people skip suhoor and return to sleep due to feeling sleepy or tired. However, suhoor is essential for maintaining energy throughout the day.

Skipping this mealtime can result in nutrient and energy deficiencies, leading to feelings of weakness, dizziness, and increased dehydration.

Overeating at Iftar

After a long day of fasting, the temptation to overeat at iftar is strong. However, this habit is not recommended, as it can overload the digestive system. Overeating may cause bloating, acid reflux, and even lead to rapid weight gain.

Eating Too Many Sweets

Sweet foods and drinks are often the go-to choices when breaking the fast. Their sweetness provides a quick energy boost, but consuming too much sugar can cause a spike in blood sugar levels, followed by a sharp drop. This can leave the body feeling hungry and weak again soon after.

Not Drinking Enough Water

Fasting leads to a significant loss of fluids, so it is important to rehydrate properly during sahur and iftar.

Inadequate fluid intake can lead to dehydration, fatigue, headaches, and digestive issues like constipation. Aim to drink two glasses at iftar, four glasses during the night, and two more during sahur. Avoid caffeinated or carbonated drinks, as they can contribute to dehydration.

Consuming Excessive Oily and Fried Foods

In addition to sugary foods, fried items are often favored when breaking the fast. However, excessive consumption of oily foods can cause digestive problems, raise cholesterol levels, and contribute to unhealthy weight gain.

Going Straight to Bed After Suhoor or Iftar

Lying down immediately after suhoor or iftar can lead to digestive issues, such as acid reflux and stomach discomfort. This habit can also slow down metabolism, leading to other health problems.

Staying Up Late

During Ramadan, sleep patterns often change due to waking up for sahur and night prayers. Lack of adequate sleep or poor-quality sleep can make the body more prone to fatigue and lower the immune system’s ability to fight off illness. This can cause a rapid depletion of energy.

To stay healthy and energized throughout Ramadan, it’s crucial to avoid these habits that can disrupt your body’s balance. Ensure you consume a balanced and nutritious diet at both sahur and iftar, and stay hydrated.

Be mindful of overeating at iftar to prevent digestive problems and maintain energy levels. Prioritize good sleep quality, rest, and continue to engage in physical activity to maintain your fitness.
