Sauna jackets are popular among people who want to burn more calories and lose weight faster. The concept comes from an increase in body temperature, which leads to more sweating. This process is thought to help burn more calories because the body works harder to maintain an optimal body temperature.

Some people wear sauna jackets while jogging in the hopes of burning more calories. Is it safe to use this sauna jacket while jogging?

What is a sauna jacket and how does it work?

Sauna jackets are actually sportswear designed to burn more calories by retaining body heat. These jackets are typically constructed of a neoprene-like material that resembles a wetsuit. However, in Indonesia, sauna jackets are frequently made of a plastic-like material.

Sauna jackets made of PVC or vinyl tend to retain heat and promote sweat production during exercise. These materials are typically lightweight and easy to clean.

After using a sauna jacket, the body will experience a faster increase in temperature without increasing exercise intensity. In theory, increased calorie burning could speed up weight loss.

Risks of using a sauna jacket while jogging

There isn't much research to back up the theory that using a sauna jacket increases calorie burn. Furthermore, sauna jackets made of plastic are more likely to block air circulation and cause excessive heat.

Sauna jackets, which are commonly used in Indonesia, can increase the risk of overheating or heat stroke because the plastic material does not absorb sweat effectively. This is typically characterized by several symptoms, including:

  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Profuse sweating
  • Low blood pressure when standing
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea
  • Weak and rapid pulse

If you notice any of these symptoms, stop exercising immediately, remove your sauna jacket, and rest in the shade. Allow your body temperature to drop, and drink water or energy drinks to replenish electrolytes.

Tips for choosing sportwear

When selecting sportswear, consider the concept of comfortable and safe clothing to help you perform while exercising and avoid injury or discomfort. Consider the following points:

  • Choose materials that absorb sweat well and allow for good air circulation, such as polyester or spandex. Avoid sweat-absorbing materials that leave you feeling clammy and uncomfortable
  • Make sure your workout clothes fit properly and are comfortable to wear. Avoid wearing clothes that are too tight or too loose, as they may interfere with your movement or affect your performance
  • Select clothing with an ergonomic design that facilitates body movement during exercise
  • When exercising outside or in cold weather, consider wearing layers to help keep your body warm
  • Pay attention to safety factors such as straps that are too long or buttons that are difficult to undo, which may cause injury
  • Consider sportswear that is brightly colored or has reflective elements to improve visibility in dark environments

If your exercise goal is to lose weight quickly, a sauna jacket may not be the best option. Consult your doctor or nutritionist for recommendations on a suitable and safe weight-loss plan.
