Colds are a common health issue that anyone can experience, including babies, children, and adults. During changes in weather, babies are especially vulnerable to catching colds, as their immune systems are still developing, making them more prone to the viruses that cause colds.

Although colds typically aren’t serious, the symptoms can cause discomfort for babies and concern for parents. In this article, you will learn about the symptoms of colds in babies and how to manage them effectively.

Recognizing Cold Symptoms in Babies

When the weather changes, such as transitioning from summer to the rainy season, there are fluctuations in temperature, humidity, and air pressure. These shifts can weaken a baby’s immune system, making them more prone to respiratory infections.

If a baby catches a cold, they may show the following symptoms:

  • Stuffed or runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Being fussy and crying frequently
  • Trouble sleeping due to nasal congestion
  • Reduced appetite
  • Mild cough
  • Low-grade fever

How to Manage Baby Colds

Most colds in babies don’t require medication and will resolve on their own. However, there are several methods to help relieve symptoms and provide comfort during the healing process:

Ensure Adequate Hydration

Babies need plenty of fluids, whether through breast milk, formula, or water (for babies over 6 months). Staying hydrated helps keep the baby’s throat moist and alleviates nasal congestion.

Use Nasal Spray

A saline nasal spray can help thin the mucus in the baby’s nose. Once the mucus is cleared, the baby can breathe more easily and sleep more soundly.

Use a Humidifier

A humidifier in the baby’s room helps maintain air moisture, especially during cold or dry weather. This can prevent irritation of the respiratory tract and make breathing easier for the baby.

Adjust the Baby’s Sleeping Position

Keeping the baby’s head elevated slightly while sleeping helps mucus drain and prevents congestion. You can place a small pillow under the mattress or elevate the baby’s head with your hands.

Keep the Baby Warm

Giving the baby a warm bath can help relieve nasal congestion. A gentle massage on the baby’s chest and back with a baby balm can also provide comfort and warmth.

When do you consult a doctor?

Although colds are generally treatable at home, there are certain warning signs to be aware of, including:

  • A fever over 39ºC (102.2ºF)
  • A fever higher than 38ºC (100.4ºF) in babies under 3 months
  • Difficulty breathing, such as rapid breathing or visible chest retraction
  • Cold symptoms persisting for more than 10 days without improvement
  • Signs of dehydration, such as dry diapers, dry mouth, or crying without tears
  • The appearance of an unusual skin rash

If any of these signs are present, it’s important to take the baby to the doctor right away. You can also use the consultation service through the Ai Care app by downloading it from the App Store or Play Store.
