For those carrying excess weight, it is always a joy to see the numbers on the scale drop, indicating a successful weight loss. But have you ever wondered where the fat goes after you lose weight? Check out the answer in the following article.

How does fat burning occur?

Many people believe that fat burns away as we sweat or exhale. As a result, increasing physical activity is thought to be the most effective method for fat loss. This notion is not entirely incorrect, but in order to understand effective weight loss methods, you must first understand how fat is burned.

The human body is designed to store extra energy in fat cells. Excess energy is stored in fat cells as triglycerides. Over time, this excess energy can accumulate as fat, affecting the shape and health of your body.

Even while sleeping, your body uses energy in the following ways:

  • At rest: Organs such as the heart need energy to pump blood, the lungs to breathe, and the brain to think
  • When active: Muscles need energy to move
  • When eating: The digestive system uses energy to break down and store food

To promote weight loss, use the calorie deficit method, which means consuming fewer calories than you burn. Caloric requirements differ from person to person, depending on activity, age, and gender, but you can begin with a calorie deficit by consuming only 500-750 calories per day.

If you maintain a consistent calorie deficit, fat is released from fat cells and converted into energy. Your body's fat stores will gradually be depleted, resulting in a loss of body fat.

Where does the fat go when you lose weight?

Implementing a calorie deficit diet allows you to control how many calories you consume in relation to how many calories you burn. With this diet, your body will use fat reserves for energy.

When the body burns fat, it generates byproducts such as:

  • Water, sweat, and urine
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) is exhaled through the lung
  • Body heat during exercise to maintain a normal body temperature

When you exercise, your muscles burn glycogen, which is the body's stored energy. After 30 to 60 minutes of exercise, your body will begin to burn fat. The intensity of your exercise determines how much fat is burned. As a result, experts recommend doing cardio, weight lifting, and resistance training for at least 30 minutes, preferably 2-3 times per week. Exercise increases muscle mass, which helps you burn more calories and boosts your basal metabolism.

Tips for effective weight loss

Here are some tips to help you lose weight:

  • Exercise for at least 30 minutes per day, five times a week
