Omeprazole is one of several medications used to reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach. It is recommended to treat conditions caused by excessive stomach acid levels, such as stomach ulcers or GERD.

Omeprazole should not be taken carelessly, as incorrect dosage or prolonged use can result in serious side effects. Learn about how omeprazole works and how to take it safely.

How omeprazole works

Omeprazole belongs to the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) class of drugs. It works by inhibiting the enzyme that produces stomach acid.

It is a prodrug, meaning that it becomes active only after being metabolized by the body. When omeprazole reaches the stomach's parietal cells, it is converted into its active form and binds to the enzyme responsible for stomach acid production. This helps to reduce excess stomach acid, which can cause acid reflux, heartburn, and abdominal pain.

Things to consider before taking omeprazole

Before taking omeprazole, you should understand your health condition, check for potential risks, and inform your doctor. Consult your doctor to see if it is safe to take omeprazole if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Difficulty or pain when swallowing
  • Black stools or dark vomit
  • Heartburn that lasts for more than three months, indicating GERD
  • Frequent chest pain, heartburn, and wheezing
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Allergies to omeprazole, other medications, foods, colors, or preservatives
  • Breathing problems, kidney problems, or a severe allergic reaction after taking omeprazole previously
  • Interaction with other medicines if you are on other medications
  • Low magnesium levels

Guidelines for taking omeprazole correctly

  • Omeprazole must be taken exactly as directed on the package or as prescribed by your doctor, including the dosage and number of times per day
  • Shake the liquid omeprazole before taking it. Use the measuring spoon that came with the medicine to get the correct dose
  • Capsules should be swallowed whole with water. If you are unable to swallow the capsule whole, open it, sprinkle the medicine into a spoonful of water, and swallow without chewing
  • Omeprazole powder should be dissolved in a little water. This mixture can also be swallowed directly or administered via a feeding tube
  • If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Do not attempt to make up the missed dose by taking a double dose, as this may increase the risk of side effects or complications. If it's almost time for your next dose, simply take it according to your usual schedule
  • If you frequently miss doses or have specific concerns about taking omeprazole, speak with your doctor again
  • Take omeprazole at the same time every day to keep the drug levels consistent in your body.

Omeprazole has a risk of interaction with certain types of medications. Inform your doctor about your condition, medications, and supplements you are taking.
